A proven work-horse!
The outstanding ACOM 1000 - One-kilowatt 160-6 m. amplifier from ACOM
When contest group GM0B didnt want to be let down, what did they do?
ACOM, who built the Alpha / ETO 91b, and who now built the excellent ACOM 2000A amplifier, have manufactured a 1 KW 160-6m (yes that is top-band to six metres!) manually tuned valve amplifier.
The ACOM 1000 Manual-tuning amplifier is pictured below
Click here for information on the 6 metre single band version of this amplifier.

THE DETAILS
Tube - a single 4CX800 (GU74b) grounded cathode, grid-driven, 1000W output all bands.
IMD's better than 35dB wrt rated output.
Harmonic suppression - 1.8-29.7 MHz better than 50dB. 50-54 MHz better than 60dB.
Broadband input circuit for solid-state radios - less than 1.3:1 input VSWR.
QSK - very quiet vacuum relay.
New digital-display approach for fast, accurate amplifier tuning.
LCD display; many parameters displayed similarly to ACOM 2000A.
Full protection to usual ACOM standard (protected against flashover, high SWR, mistuning, excess grid currents, switch-on surges, excess valve exhaust temperature, etc, etc).
Built-in automatic input attenuator to protect from excessive drive power.
Built-in filter to reduce TVI/BCI, with pi-L output network.
RF deck similar to ACOM 2000A.
Microprocessor control.
Built in RF-wattmeter (operates even when amplifier not in "operate" mode).
Output matching capability - up to 3:1 VSWR loads.
Dimensions 16.6 X 14 X 7.2 inches, 40 lbs. Transformer may be removed for DXPedition or /p purposes.

RSGB's Member's magazine RadCom featured a full review of both the ACOM 1000 and ACOM 2000A in the March 2001 RadCom. To see the full text of the ACOM 1000 review, click here. For the ACOM 2000A review, click here.
*"Overall the Acom 1000 is an excellent performer and with a low price tag, unbeatable value for a 1kW amplifier which also covers 6m." For full text of review please click HERE
*"The Acom 2000A amplifier is really in a class of its own, and available at an excellent price for what must be the ultimate linear."
*"The two Acom linears reviewed can both be highly recommended as offering excellent performance and quality at a very attractive price, and in addition Acom have a 2 year warranty on their amplifiers (including the valves)."
We have some corrections to the review, which, although they were accepted by the RSGB, did not meet the publication deadline
1. In the introduction to the review Peter Hart states "Both amplifiers are manufactured in Bulgaria from parts sourced in Eastern Europe and this results in a top-quality amplifier at a very attractive price." ACOM have asked us to make clear that the vast majority of components are sourced from Western components producers. The vacuum tubes used - 4CX800A's - are made at the Svetlana factory, in St Petersburg, Russia (the oldest vacuum tube factory in the world). ACOM produce the bandswitches and variable capacitors for the tank circuits at their own factory.
2. In the description of the ACOM 2000A, the QSK is discussed "The amplifier follows well in QSK operation but the relays are quite noisy. They would benefit from the same mounting method as adopted in the 1000." In fact the ACOM 2000A reviewed was an early model and the current units use the same virtually-silent rubber-mounting method as used in the ACOM 1000.
We also have some user comments (Just a selection here..... everyone is delighted)
"I worked for many years in the scientific instrument business., and in my opinion, this equipment is of that standard." (G3IOE)
"Brilliant" (G0LCS)
"Tremendous, I'm considering buying another one" (G4CBW) (Tony - we won't stand in your way about it!)
"The visual Load tuning control can be optimised very quickly and so tuning is very straight forward. And hey, this amp will give you 6 Metres also! Here in the UK we would expect to pay another £1200 for the privilage of another amp. In my opinion, this is one of the best amps I have seen / operated and is real value for money. There is nothing to compare this side of the 'States". (G4DHF) Since writing this David has bought an ACOM 2000A, but still wants to keep his ACOM 1000 - for 6m!
"It's very quiet with almost no fan noise and a silent changeover relay. Transmit switching is full QSK and fast enough for pactor. A very well built and civilized amplifier". (EI6IZ)
"Superb" (G0CHQ)
"We used first on our dxped as E30NA, will now always in our equipment. Offer us: less weight (important for luggage) then other amps before, on each band from 160-6m 1KW ! We had big problems with power situation ( --> 275VAC ) in our QTH. The Acom 1000 electronic watch for that and secure the amp all the time. One FL2100 we lost ! Also the "easy tuning" is a great solution for fast QSY and why did other manufactors not use this silent fan system in there amps? I am sure that was a good deal ! 73 Chris DL5NAM-C56A-C56T-VP2MCS-E30TA-JW0PK-E30NA"
"Manual OK, Linear works fine, quiet fan, QSK with FT1000MP works well, can't hear the relays! Looks good, works well, interesting design. Thank you for your friendly and courteous attention when I visited" (G3JDT)
"Best amplifier I have ever used" - (HK4CZE)
"I would just run out of superlatives - it is light years ahead of other any amplifiers I have used.
The things I particularly like
The silence - I think this is very important. All solid state and most valve linears have very noisy fans, which make for very unpleasant operating.
The wide SWR tolerance. I am now able to feed both my beam and Carolina Windom on all bands with no atu. Fewer knobs to turn.
The ease of tuning. After initial tuning on all bands and noting the settings it really onnly does take a few seconds per band. The TRI and attenuator arrangement is just great.
The range of information available via the display. Very helpful and reassuring.
The protection arrangements - Great peace of mind.
The overall construction - It is a real quality product.
Lastly - It does everything the specification says. "

Hi Ron, just to let you know all is ok with the new amp......what a wonderful piece of equipment..idiot proof too....i'm extremeley pleased...thankyou..(Bob, M0MJA)
It is without doubt the best amateur radio purchase i have ever made , and probably will ever make, the unit has worked without fault now for more than 2500 qso's and is still as silent as the the day it arrived, total quality, and extremely easy to tune , just a wonderful amplifier. (Bob, M0MJA after one year of use)
"This is the third amplifier I have owned, and the ACOM 1000 certainly lives up to the high reputation it has received. Without doubt I consider it to be the best linear to be available for it's price that is available on the UK market. The statement that it is "Easy to operate" and is both "User-friendly" and "Looks after itself" is certainly true," (John Francis, G3LWI)
Many thanks for the high-speed service. The 1000 arrived the day after placing my order and I was QRV the same evening. Of course, I am delighted with the amplifier's performance. But having read all those glowing reviews on www.eham.net this was always going to be the case! (David Johnstone, GM4EVS)
The amp arrived in very good condition ! I tried it out for several hours and really … it’s a beauty !!!!! Thank you again for all your help and kindness ! If there is anyone who I can advice to buy equipment in your store, I will do it !! Kind regards and many thanks ! (Bart Dries, ON4JK)
We KNOW that these amplifiers are light-years ahead of any others in terms of value, ease of operation, and reliability.
